What Is Design?

eccentric design

When you hear the word “design”, what comes to mind?  Do you think of paint colors? Furniture? Font?  Maybe the layout of a final project?  These are all appropriate responses, but the topic we want to cover this month has to do with another element of design: usability.  Let’s talk about it.

In 2026, it is predicted that design will become one of the top marketing skills.  This extends beyond just a beautiful looking website and has to do more with how simple and delightful the website is to use.  A main priority of marketing used to be “performance first”, but in 2026 we’re seeing a shift towards “experience first”. While clicks and a return on investment is still important, an engaging and seamless experience will encourage loyalty to your brand.  Meaningful interactions will drive long-term trust and affinity.

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about AI over the last year since we’ve seen a huge surge in the use of artificial intelligence.  But worry not; technology like AI is not replacing creative strategy. When used  wisely as a creative partner rather than a replacement, it enables higher-level strategic thinking, ideation, and innovation. Technology is transforming the limits of possibility, enabling more impactful, personalized, and efficient creative strategies.  AI is a complimentary tool and can add that missing piece to your user experience that takes an “OK” website to an “Oh Wow!” website.

Clean, content-forward design continues to dominate in 2026 because it prioritizes clarity. Minimalist layouts that let the message shine include thoughtful typography, generous whitespace, and purposeful imagery that helps users quickly find what they need. While you want your users to spend some time on your website, you don’t want them spending time on the site because they can’t find what they’re looking for.

Ultimately, the top design and digital marketing trends dominating 2026 are grounded in authenticity and the intelligent use of available technology. However, adaptability and the willingness to step into the future remains the true competitive advantage, as trends will continue to shift, consumer behavior will evolve, and technology will keep pushing the boundaries that we’ve grown familiar with. Therefore, the brands that can learn, pivot, and innovate quickly will outperform those that cling to outdated strategies.
