So You Want to Work for Yourself?

So You Want to Work for Yourself?

We’ve all been there.

Maybe it took a particularly bad week, or month, or a performance review you didn’t agree with.  Or maybe it was a dream from the beginning.  But the words “I’m going to start my own business” have probably floated through your mind at some point in your professional career.  Is it a realistic move for you?  Let’s talk about it.

It can get frustrating to work for others. Your ideas are listened to but sometimes abandoned; your schedule is rigid with many inefficiencies; and you can get to a place where you don’t see the upside potential. Many of us have been there.  The lure and image of gaining the ability to set your own goals, make your own decisions, and carry them out can be exhilarating. The bonus of being able to work remotely from home in sweatpants, making the hours you want and being your own boss can seal the deal.

Depending on your industry or skill set, venturing out your own might be closer than you think!

Choosing to work for yourself means you are in charge of your success.  Your output affects your income.  Being your own boss means you have the independence to choose what work you want to take on, and how you deliver it, and who you want to work with. Your flexibility and approach is completely down to you.  You get to build your team and live out your employment dream.  That can be a priceless experience in a tumultuous world.

Are there things you’ll have to learn along the way?  Absolutely!  Were there things you needed to learn when you were working for someone else?  Also yes.  Why not put in the time, money, stress, and energy into something that’s all yours?  If working for yourself is on the short list, do some research with your local Chamber of Commerce and Community College to see what classes they offer for entrepreneurs.  This is a great way to start building a network of peers too, since venturing out on your own can be a lonely gig at times.

One thing we can say at MadCap Marketing and Creative is that even on a tough day, it’s better when you know you’re in control of your message, your product, and your direction.  It’s probably the closest thing to raising a child, because the days can be long but the years are short and we regret nothing.

Our featured client this month is Riedmann Enterprises, the premier snow removal provider in Washington State.  The Riedmanns took the experience they gained in other companies and their own drive and culture and poured it into Riedmann Enterprises.  Their hard work paid off!  They’ve provided the Puget Sound area with high quality service and compassionate professionalism for the past 10 years.  We are proud to work with them.

Lastly, we want to feature MadCap’s own, Taylor Lund.  Taylor joined the team as an intern first and realized this was the vibe she was after!  Taylor’s talent as a graphic designer has touched a variety of projects, and she’s been able to build upon her talents by expanding to video editing and social media.  Joining a team like MadCap has been a positive thing for a young professional, because she’s been able to experiment, expand, and practice in areas she may not have been able to cross into in a more limited setting.  We are so glad to work with Talented Taylor!

If you’re thinking about what’s next with regards to your business, give us a call.  We’ll always give it to you straight and we love talking through new ideas.
