It is easy to write off offline marketing tactics as digital tools and techniques like social media marketing and email marketing campaigns become the standard across most industries. However, don’t let it fool you. Offline marketing tactics are still a crucial component to reaching audiences in our digital-first world. Even the most successful digital marketing campaign should be accompanied by traditional marketing methods for the best possible results. We will explain.
For starters, what is offline marketing? Offline marketing is any marketing method that advertises your business outside the digital landscape to generate sales leads, increase sales and boost brand awareness. These are things like television, billboard ads, radio and print marketing. Think of it as anything that business, service or brand without using a computer or smart device to get you to see it.
So is offline marketing just the stuff that existed before computers were even a thing? It’s really much more than that. It’s an old-school method in a new-school world, because offline marketing encompasses much more than simply operating outside the digital space. The relationships that live in the interactive business world and the emotional reaction that comes from those relationships can act as a bridge between digital and physical experiences, allowing brands to connect with audiences on multiple fronts, usually in a deeper way.
One of the most popular and most successful offline marketing tactics is direct mail. In a world where technology seems to change by the hour, it may come as a shock that one of the most consistent marketing methods is still a good old-fashioned letter or postcard delivered by the post office. You’ll start to see this method hard at work very soon as many organizations gear up for the holiday season. Regardless of whether this is a nonprofit organization requesting funds for the work they do, or a company having a sale they definitely don’t want you to miss, snail mail still comes in strong as a method with staying power.
There’s no spam filter to get through with direct mail, and no one clicks the “Delete” or “Send to Spam” buttons either. Direct mail campaigns allow marketers to reach their audience directly and personally. Lists can be procured from a broker, or you can mail geographically. If the offer has any interest, it will be placed on the recipient’s refrigerator, corkboard or review pile, where it has a good chance of being repeatedly seen. Your offer gets more exposure without being invasive.
Local and community involvement is another long-standing successful offline method for getting in front of an audience that is paying attention. Have you ever seen a company name on the back of a kid’s soccer jersey or a sign on the scoreboard at a high school football stadium? That company chose to sponsor the team in some way and in return gets the benefit of hundreds of eyes on their logo and name for a whole season. Parents may choose to get their windows replaced by the company that helped maintain the soccer field for their son or daughter’s team, rather than going with someone that showed up in an Instagram ad. It’s another old-school method, but it gets attention and gets results.
If you’re a business with a limited marketing budget, don’t dismiss the power of offline marketing methods. Your customers want a meaningful relationship with you, and doing things that demonstrate your commitment to the community can showcase your authenticity.
